Phasing and Timetables 

Work on Phase 1 of the project will begin on Monday, Setember 5, and will be complete by Summer 2012.

This phases of work will see improvements to the surfaces and layout of the street from Mill Street up to the Mall. Lower High Street will also be affected, with the new surfaces being laid here during Phase 2 of the works. The diagram below shows the illustrative timetable for the works, which may be subject to change.

* The project will stop for two weeks over the Christmas period from December 22.

In Phase 1 the road will be made into a single two-way carriageway along its length. Traffic will no longer be permitted to pass by the south side of the Queens Monument nor past the south side of the Cannon.

As well as the new paved surface, there will be changes to bus stop locations and loading bays. Buses that currently stop by the Monument will be relocated to stop beside the Town Hall. The taxi rank will be relocated to King Street.

The whole street will be designated a 'Pedestrian Zone' with permitted vehicles allowed access to the street from Pudding Lane. Through traffic from the bridge gyratory will not be permitted.

New trees will be planted and new street furniture will be installed, which will include new granite benches within Town Hall Square.

Works to improve the surfaces in the Lower High Street will be completed in Phases 2 of the works.
